Because AI is essentially software, the original name given for AI was Large Language Model (LLM). The name speaks to the massive amount of software code written to perform the tasks of Artificial Intelligence. AI goes beyond the kind of intelligence of a Google search, for example. A Google search responds to a simple question, like, what is the mailing address of the Kenmore Teachers FCU?
AI on the other hand takes multiple instructions and then goes about the task of providing an output that best fits the criteria you have asked of it. The outcome is not always exactly what a practitioner is asking for (particularly in the early stages of AI development) but AI is quickly improving its ability to provide the result a practitioner is looking for. As more people use AI and because it is a self-learning tool, the more it performs, the smarter it gets. In fact, today’s iterations of AI are becoming suggestive. Not only will it returns a result based on your instruction, it will sometimes ask you some questions that “it” thinks you might want to consider that you didn’t ask it!
Scary? Like all new technologies, yes!
Can it be used for good as well as bad? Of course.
Full disclosure… This Board Brief was not created by AI, though it could have been!
What to Do
How does it affect me now? How will it affect me and society in the future?
Good questions.

Our Advice
Most of us are not technologists and we have our own opinions about the direction of technology. But one thing is for sure, AI is here to stay. Understanding it and embracing how it is likely to shape all our lives will help you navigate the future.
