What you should know about FREE Apps

We think, I really need this App! You go to Google Play or the App Store (Apple) to search and download the App. AND, you notice there are many different Apps to choose from. You decide, why download an App that costs money. I'll pick a FREE one.

Beware of FREE Apps! Why?? Making a point to understand how hacking works can help you practice Mobile Device Security in your everyday life.

There are important reasons to think twice.

  1. Free Apps have media ads which can be annoying and obtrusive.
  2. The App will likely have its own tracking software, gathering a lot of data about your use & whereabouts.
  3. The App developer may sell your information when you click the "Agree to the Terms & Conditions" statement.
  4. The App developer may be a scammer (without your knowledge) who is collecting personal information on your phone once you download it.

The fourth point is critical. It is fairly easy for scammers to extract information from your phone once you downloaded their App. Such malicious Apps are really password tracking software or malware or ransomware. It has access to your data and can take control of your phone (either covertly or overtly).

Our Advice
That is why you should be very suspicious of Free Apps. Make sure they are widely distributed (have many downloads) and make sure they are highly rated (4.8 or higher). It is also helpful if you or someone you know has a history of using the App. The Apple Store & Google Play do monitor Apps for suspicious or bad acts, but they don't always catch them right away.

Free is not always free. Free Apps are also not necessarily bad or malicious. To sum it all up...You are best to avoid downloading free Mobile Apps unless you know they are highly reliable, are in wide distribution (many user downloads) and the App has a very high rating (4.8 or above)
