What to do when affected by a Security Breach

On or about May 31, 2023, Progress Software reported to its clients of a significant security breach in their MOVEit Transfer software. MOVEit is used largely in the financial services industry (accounting, insurance, industry consultant companies, etc.) where Personal Identifiable Information (PII) is involved. In many cases, important PII was compromised including Name, SSN, DOB, Zip Code, State of Residence, Policy/Account Number, etc.

As of this release, financial services companies who use MOVEit Transfer software are informing their customers of the breach. In most cases, they are offering free 24-month Identity Protection services through Kroll Associates or other Identity Protection services.

What You Should Do? If you are notified by a service provider saying you are affected by the breach, take advantage of their offer for free ID Protection monitoring (if they are offering it). If you are not affected, we still advise you to be diligent in the management of your personal information including monitoring and freezing your credit report.

To monitor and freeze your credit report, contact all of the credit reporting agencies (below).

Equifax Credit Freeze PO Box 105788 Atlanta, GA 30348-5788 1-888-298-0045 https://www.equifax.com

Experian Credit Freeze PO Box 9554 Allen, TX 75013 1-888-397-3742 https://www.experian.com

TransUnion Credit Freeze PO Box 160 Woodlyn, PA 19094 1-800-916-8800 https://www.transunion.com

In general, you should always freeze your credit report. This restricts outside lending organizations from getting your credit report. Without the ability to get your credit report, they will not be able to issue a loan in your name. If you are planning to get a loan, you will want to inform your financial institution that you freeze your credit report and that you must “unfreeze” the report prior to them making the request with the credit reporting agencies. Once they access your credit report, you should go back to the credit reporting agencies to re-freeze your credit report.
