January is Scam Alert Month (Part 2)

So, what’s going on with these unwanted text messages?

You may be noticing more and more uninitiated, unwanted text messages. They are dangerous. Beware!

Some text messages come from companies when you've arranged upcoming appointments. Other communications may be alerts you’ve set up with other vendors like credit card companies. These kinds of text notices have something in common; you are expecting them based on the setting or arrangements you’ve made. Directly or indirectly, you requested these types of text communications.

On the other hand, you may be getting unsolicited text messages where there is a web link or a phone number. If you don’t recognize texts like these, your safest bet is to report them as spam on your phone and immediately delete them.

Whatever you do, do not return the call or click on the link. Doing so can lead to the kind of scams or malware downloads we’ve talked about in many previous Board Briefs.

Whether unwanted emails or text, the message is the same.

  • Be diligent.
  • Stop and think.
  • Block the text from your phone.
  • Report it as a Junk text if your phone allows you to do so.
  • And delete the text immediately!

You’ll be glad you did.
