Password Manager Series (Part 2 of 5)

Password Managers (PM) are useful tools in several ways.

  • Convenience: They keep track of all the websites and Apps you use so each time you log in, you don’t need to remember your login and password or have to type them in.
  • Security: They mitigate the exposure to keystroke tracking malware that might be on your device. They also make it easier to periodically change your password, which adds a layer of security.
  • Best Practices: They offer random, strong, unique password generators which is extremely useful as you periodically change your password. This makes it difficult for hackers and scammers to “guess” your password.

Are Password Managers safe?
Like everything connected to the web, they are a tool that carry some inherent risk. For example, on October 26, 2022, LastPass (a free & subscription-based PM) had a security breach that they reported publicly on December 22nd.

The degree of “safety” depends partly on the security of the PM (like LastPass) and on how you use it. Using a PM requires you to be diligent. Next Board Brief we’ll talk about the types of Password Managers and how they differ.
